There is good and bad news when it comes to AI and Etsy. Recently Etsy has had a rash of resellers and non-handmade products added to their site which caused them to set new policies and enforcements. On the one hand, this is a good thing – as a fellow Etsy seller I don’t want those types of products on Etsy either. However, no system is perfect and unfortunately some legitimate shops will be caught in the crosshairs. This information is important for all Etsy sellers but especially those who purchase legitimate licensed artwork (not trademarked images) and use it in their final product.
Etsy has long been a sanctuary for handmade creators, but recent actions have seen numerous shops and listings taken down under the label “not handmade.” This is often due to images being overused by multiple sellers or misappropriated by companies like Temu and Alibaba. If you’re facing these challenges, here are some strategies to protect your shop and ensure your listings remain active:
1. Utilize Reverse Image Search Tools to Report Infringement
Before listing an item, use sites like Pixsy.com, QTI.AI, or RedPoints.com to perform a reverse image search. This can help you determine if your chosen images are being used elsewhere on the internet. If you find unauthorized uses, these tools can also assist you in issuing takedown notices to protect your work. You can also do reverse image searches on Google. If/when you do find your images on other sites, follow the process for each site to have them removed. I will list some links I have come across at the bottom of this blog post.
2. Alert Etsy Proactively
If you notice something amiss with your images or listings, don’t wait for Etsy to flag them. Being proactive and informing Etsy about potential issues can show that you are diligent and committed to maintaining the integrity of your shop.
3. Customize Your Images
To avoid the pitfalls of common imagery, alter your images enough so they stand out. This could mean tweaking the design, changing colors, or adding unique elements that differentiate your offerings from others.
4. Create Original Images
Whenever possible, create your own images from scratch. If you sell Print on Demand items, order the items yourself and take your own picture once you receive them. Taking your own photographs not only adds a personal touch but also significantly reduces the risk of your listings being flagged as non-handmade.
5. Heed Etsy’s Warnings
Pay close attention to any warnings or notices from Etsy regarding your listings. Addressing concerns promptly can prevent more severe actions like having your shop taken down. Respond to emails, contact support, and if all else fails reach out to me and I will see what I can do to help. I don’t have a direct line to Etsy but I might be able to guide you in how to respond or move forward.
6. Document, document, document
Keep detailed records and photos of your creation process. This can serve as proof that your items are genuinely handmade, which might be helpful if Etsy questions the authenticity of your products.
7. Educate Yourself on Etsy’s Policies
Regularly review Etsy’s policies and updates. Understanding the fine print can help you avoid unintentional violations and also keep you informed about what Etsy considers as ‘handmade’.
8. Join the community
Join Etsy forums and community groups. These platforms can be invaluable for receiving support and advice from fellow sellers who might have faced similar issues. They can offer practical tips based on their experiences.
9. Seek Legal Advice
If you frequently encounter intellectual property issues or copyright claims, it might be worth consulting with a legal professional who specializes in copyright law. They can provide guidance on how to protect your work legally.
10. Diversify Your Online Presence
Don’t rely solely on Etsy. Consider diversifying your sales channels by setting up your own website or using other online marketplaces. This can reduce the impact of any issues on Etsy and help stabilize your business.
These steps not only help in complying with Etsy’s policies but also enhance your credibility and reputation as a genuine handmade seller.
By implementing these strategies, you can safeguard your creative work and continue to thrive on Etsy.
